The Guiding Principles Behind Our Education Support Work
The Pathway Partnership was born from lived experience. Growing up, I was the child who struggled in school with learning, behaviour, emotions and feeling different without really understanding why. Those experiences followed me far beyond the classroom and shaped many of the decisions I made as a young person and later as an adult. It wasn’t until much later in life that I began to understand my own brain, my ADHD and what had often been sitting underneath the things other people could see from the outside. That understanding raised a question that ultimately became the foundation of The Pathway Partnership: what might have been different if someone had helped me understand myself earlier?
Today, schools and families are supporting young people with increasingly complex emotional, behavioural and developmental needs. National figures continue to show persistent disruptive behaviour as the most commonly recorded reason for suspension in England. But our purpose isn’t to point fingers at schools, teachers, parents or young people. Education professionals are working under enormous pressure, families are doing the best they can with the understanding and resources available to them, and children themselves are often trying to navigate feelings and experiences they don’t yet have the words or skills to explain. We believe progress starts when we stop asking only “How do we stop this behaviour?” and also begin asking “What might be happening underneath it?”
That’s why The Pathway Partnership exists: to help create stronger connections between the child, the school and the family. We want young people to develop self-awareness before negative beliefs become part of their identity; we want the adults around them to have greater understanding and practical tools; and we want schools and families to feel supported rather than blamed. We can’t change every challenge a young person will face, but we can change how early we notice, how deeply we listen and how effectively we respond. See the child. Understand the need. Build the pathway.
I think that’s your About Us page. It explains where this came from without making the whole thing about you, acknowledges the pressure schools and parents are under rather than criticising them, and then naturally lands on why the organisation exists.
